Did you know an interviewer has made their mind up in the first five seconds of meeting

Have you ever had a situation in which you’ve met someone and had an instant dislike. Or you’ve met someone and hit it off immediately. Studies have shown that our subconscious picks up on things such as appearance, body language, voice and smell, immediately creating an impression of that person. Follow our list of interview pointers to improve your chances of being offered the job.

The biggest interview weakness is making a poor first impression. Even if you had sample interview questions and answers the likelihood of being hired when making a poor introduction will be slim.

Interview Pointer 1 – NEVER be late

This is the worst possible start to an interview. Make sure you turn up on time and not too early. 5 minutes before the scheduled time is best. If you are running late please call your interviewer at least 10 minutes before the interview to explain you have been delayed.

Interview Pointer 2 – Whilst waiting in reception don’t sit down

When your interviewer turns up you want to be standing, with purpose and looking confident, not slouched in a chair. I once worked with someone who refused to hire anyone if they did not stand to shake their hand.

Interview Pointer – 3 Avoid the wet fish handshake

Make sure you give a confident handshake but not too firm and please, not two handed. If you suffer from sweaty palms use the bathroom or carry a spare handkerchief with you.

Interview Pointer – 4 Don’t forget the interviewers name

The sweetest sound to anyone is the sound of their own name. If you get it wrong or forget it, you have just made yourself an enemy. If the name is hard to pronounce ask the receptionist how to pronounce the name before your interview.

Interview Pointer – 5 Maintain eye contact

If you are looking at your shoes whilst shaking the interviewers hand they will think you have something to hide. Look the Interviewer in the eye or at least at their face during the meeting. Another tip is to look slightly over their shoulder. That way they don’t feel as if they are engaged in a stare out.

The best way to approach the introduction is with confidence. By following these simple steps you will find the interview will begin in a positive manner, you can find more tips on how to improve first impressions by signing up to our newsletter.

How to Gaurantee Interview Success

Competency interviews have become increasingly popular

So what are behavioral interview questions and how should you answer them to ensure you get hired? A competency based interview involves asking the candidate questions concerning their specific experience. The questions require detailed answers in which the candidate should provide insight as to how competently they dealt with certain situations (hence competency interview). The result gives the interviewer an accurate insight to the candidates ability to perform the role successfully based on relevant experiences.

Unfortunately many candidates are ill prepared for behavioral interview questions and when put on the spot struggle to give detailed answers. It is therefore essential that you prepare your answers before undergoing a behavioral based or competency interview. So how do you prepare for the interview and what type of questions will you be asked?

Here are 5 tips that will help you answer behavioral questions in an effective manner

Preparing For A Competency Interview

Prior to the interview please ensure you get a detailed job description. Whilst looking at the description put a tick next to every area you have relevant experience. Order them strongest to weakest. Now looking at the areas that you don’t have exposure to think of something you have done that is similar or think of a situation in which you have had to learn a new skill. You are going to use this example during the interview in case your lack of experience is mentioned.

How To Answer Great Interview Questions

If there are specific responsibilities such as managing a team, meeting sales targets or working to deadlines think of examples/achievements in which you’ve displayed that quality. If you are struggling to think of examples try and think of the proudest moments in your career. Perhaps a time you were commended by your boss, a customer or your colleagues.

Break the event into three parts

a) THE SITUATION – Describe the scene to the interviewer, was there a crisis? A customer complaint? A tight deadline? How did you identify the situation?

b) THE PART YOU PLAYED – Once a decision had been made on how to resolve the situation, how did you do it? If part of a team, what part did you play. If the plan wasn’t working what did you do next?

c) THE RESULTS YOU GAINED – What was the outcome of your actions? Did sales increase? Did you make a customer happy? Did you save the company money?

Do Not Use Hypothetical Answers In A Competency Interview

If you don’t have experience in a particular area be honest and say so. But don’t leave it at that, use an experience that is similar or may have some relevance. If you are asked to provide an example of how you have increased sales but haven’t been in a sales job, perhaps you can provide an example of how you have influenced a decision at work. You may have persuaded an unhappy customer not to buy elsewhere.

Possible Interview Questions

If the example you provide did not have a positive outcome, focus on what you learned from the experience. Articulate how it changed the way you performed your job and made you better. The interviewer may ask you to provide examples of times when you have been under stress, failed at a task or even been fired. It is important to remember that everyone makes mistakes. The behavioral based questions will enable the interviewer to discover exactly how you deal with failure and disappointment.

Remember that 90% of success comes from the preparation. Most people fail at a competency interview not because they can’t do the job but because they don’t convince the interviewer they can do the job!

How to Make a CV Standout Image by SOCIALisBETTER via Flickr

Creating a resume is perhaps one of the most important documents you will ever write. It can help you find the dream job, unfortunately for many people, the resume seems to be a stumbling block to finding the perfect opportunity. How many times have you sent your resume and sat by the phone waiting for a call to be interviewed?

1. Your CV must reflect your market

Who will you be sending the CV to, what will they be looking for, what will make it stand out? Here are a couple of examples. If I was going for a sales job I would first want to get the sales managers attention. How do I get the sales managers attention? By explaining in the first Paragraph my sales achievements. In my current job I may be the top performing sales person. When I send my CV, after my name or under it I may write something like (XXX co current Top Performing Sales Person).

A Doctor or an accountant may put their qualification after their name. Ensure you qualify your experience.

2. Make a CV about your achievements – Not your job

This is the most important aspect as it will make your CV stand out from all your competition. I would estimate about 95% of resumes out there list responsibilities rather than achievements. Lets imagine you have two applicants for an accounting job, one reads

1999- 2009 Finance Manager – Deutsche Bank

Responsible for

Managing a team of 5
Ensuring year end process is completed on time
Improving processes
Performing budgets, forecasts and analysis

The other reads

1999- 2009 Finance Manager – Deutsche Bank
Achievements

Managed and developed a team of 5, through ongoing coaching and mentoring two of the team have gone on to become Finance Managers.

By identifying process improvements I reduced the year end close from 12 weeks down to 4 resulting in a saving of over $300,000 in extra resources

2008 budget I identified and accomplished cost savings of over $3m saving the jobs of 5 staff.

Who would you rather invite in to interview?

3. KISS – Keep it Simple, Stupid

If you follow the above you shouldn’t have any more than two pages. Many people try and pad out the resume by filling it with fluff and generic statements. If you can’t get the interviewers attention in the first few seconds they won’t read any further. Keep it succinct and to the point. Avoid the urge to describe yourself eg: Max is a hardworking, committed and creative individual with a great eye for detail. You’ll be amazed at the amount of people who claim to have great attention to detail and when you read the resume it is littered with mistakes.

DO NOT put a picture of yourself on the resume. This never ever works (unless you are a supermodel) and it can create a negative image. Its a bit like going on a blind date. If you showed a photo before the date you give them an excuse not to meet you (unless you are Brad Pitt).

4. Make sure the right person gets to read you CV

Too many times people don’t get an interview because the right person hasn’t seen their CV. There are many barriers blocking you from the decision maker, HR, PA’s, line managers. Before sending your resume make sure you find out the name and contact details of the MD or Head of the business. If you are going to apply for a job using an online application make sure you follow it up. There was just an example this week at work where a guy had applied for a job direct with the company using their online application process. After a few weeks he hadn’t heard anything and I called him about the job. I put him forward to the line manager who loved him and offered the job. The next day this guy gets an auto response from the companies HR team saying he had been unsuccessful. This happens all the time.

5. One CV doesn’t fit all

Treat your resume like the bait when fishing. If you cast in a few times and don’t get any bites perhaps you may be using the wrong bait. Remember that the resume serves one purpose only, to compel the reader to want to find out more. You may want to make minor adjustments dependent upon the job you are applying for.

How to Prepare for the interview

Frequently Asked Interview Questions

Everyone approaches a job interview with some degree of apprehension. So just what are the top interview questions? Whilst preparing for a job interview is extremely important, most people assume they would benefit from having a list of sample job interview questions. However if you want to make a great first impression during the Interview think about:

- What you are going to say?
- How you are going to say it?
- How you are going to act, beforehand?

1. Do Your Homework

You can never have too much information – log on to the company’s website, get hold of company literature and find out about competitors. Your homework will let you demonstrate impressive interest in the organisation

2. Make A Good First Impression

Look smart and professional; dressing to impress means erring on the side of ‘traditional’ rather than ‘trendy’. Plan your route and allow plenty of time to get to the interview. Be courteous, smile and shake hands firmly.

3. Body Language

Despite being well qualified, you need to look motivated and interested in the job. Your actions, posture, gestures and facial expressions, reveal a lot about you. Remember to look the interviewer in the eye and don’t be afraid to smile when appropriate. If there is more than one interviewer, always look at and address the person who posed the question; glance at the others when you have finished your answer. Adopt a good posture and don’t cross your arms, fidget, tap your feet, sprawl or lean forward anxiously.

4. Sound Positive

You must be ready to expand on the information presented on your resume and anticipate the path the interviewer might take. No one fits a job perfectly so emphasise your most relevant skills and slant answers to reassure the interviewer that any shortfall is not a problem. Don’t use tentative language or phrases such as ‘I feel I could’, ‘I think I can’. ‘Perhaps I would’ – dilute the strength of your case. Avoid yes and no answers to which make the interview more like an interrogation. Be enthusiastic but don’t constantly interrupt, don’t be evasive – make a virtue of any career gaps on your CV

Tip! Practice before the interview; test yourself by talking out loud or presenting to partners and
friends

5. Handle Tough Questions With Confidence

Employers deliberately ask questions designed to see how you behave and react in certain
situations. Giving positive, fluent answers isn’t as difficult as it might seem, advanced planning makes it easier to anticipate general enquiries and prepare coherent,
effective responses. Be smart, turn these questions into an opportunity to take the initiative and ‘sell’ the exact message you want. If you don’t understand a question, seek clarification before answering:
- Never guess or give a knee-jerk response
- It’s much better to admit that you don’t know an answer

6. Be Prepared For The Following Questions

  • How would you describe yourself?
  • How would your manager describe you?
  • What is your career path for the future?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
  • What motivates you to be successful?
  • How do you react when you are left to work without supervision?
  • Give me an example of when you feel you have coped extremely well under pressure at
  • work?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?

- You cannot claim to have no weaknesses
- Don’t stress anything too negative
- Weaknesses are points that you have identified as areas to develop
- The best solution is to admit to one weakness and then turn it around and show how
you have constructively overcome it
- E.g. “Speaking in front of large crowds isn’t something I feel comfortable doing, so I try
to speak up in team meetings more often.”

7. Interviews Are A Two-Way Process

Always prepare questions in advance about the job or company. This is a good chance to clarify any points of doubt, you need to ensure that the job is exactly what you expected and what you want.

8. Suggested Questions To Ask

  • What are the opportunities for career progression?
  • What are the training opportunities?
  • What are my precise responsibilities?
  • How much travel is involved?
  • What are the targets for the first 6 months?
  • How long will it take you to make a final recruitment decision?

9. Close On A Confident Note

Leave the employer with a good final impression. Smile, thank them for their time, say you enjoyed discussing the job and that you are interested. Ask them what are the next steps of the process and ask if they have any further questions.

The unemployed finding lower paying jobs

Payday cash may not be what it once was. David Becker of Wisconsin was laid off from his job in IT last year. Times have been difficult and he has been steadfastly looking for work. He finally found a job, but it was in Nevada and the pay was $ 25,000 less than his old position. Many unemployed people find themselves in the same position. They take jobs after months of searching, but often have to accept lower pay. People have been searching for employment for months now and with choices few and far between, they are settling for smaller pay, in return for security.

The new job market

In the recovering economy, one of the biggest problems is salary decline. Employers are starting to create new jobs, but being frugal with starting salaries, benefits, and incentives. Experts warn consumers that though there is research being gathered on the market, it doesnt necessarily reflect the reality of what is happening. For example, the government reported that new jobs are being created. They did not report, however, that the jobs aren’t anywhere close to their previous incomes. Those used to a $ 80,000 salary may have to be content with $ 50,000. That means less money to spend, less money going out into the economy. Marisa DiNatale, director at Moodys Economy.com, said, In most cases, it means a subdued expansion, for sure.

Lower salaries and long term effects

People who are hired at lower salaries tend to lag behind for a long time. Having to play catch up is hard. A recent survey by Columbia University found workers that were laid off in the 1980s recession made 20% less than those who weren’t laid off, even 20 years later.

The amount of payday cash workers have today is being hampered by employers, but employers are not necessarily to blame. Just like anyone else, they are just as anxious to see what conditions are like and how quickly everything will get back to normal. DiNatalie added, Employers are hiring, but cautiously. This is likely going to be the case for the next nine to twelve months.

Still the change in salary isnt stopping people from taking lower-paying jobs. April Moore, an unemployed worker who took a job for 25% less than her former salary, said I wanted the immediate security.” Many job seekers, returning to employment, find themselves in this same predicament. Anyone would prefer to have a job, as it makes them secure and still able to hold out for the job they really want.

What the future holds

Despite the change in salary, there is still hope for the job market. Conservative pay is a typical side effect of recessions or declines overall. Marco Von Wachter, a Columbia economics professor, said, The first jobs to emerge from a recession typically are not well-paying ones. Though payday cash may be lower, it is still a good sign that the job market is on the upswing. This is a good sign that the recession is ending and recovery is beginning to take place.

No matter how highly rated the college you attended was, there is no perfect education to prepare you for everything that you will encounter at work. The work place is filled with a variety of people, not just work tasks. You will need to know how to adapt since no matter what company you work for this will be true. Another thing you will have to learn is each company’s culture.

Viva La Difference

Imagine your boss at your first job yelled if the phone wasn’t answered. At your second job you answer the ringing phone at someone else’s desk. The person who’s phone you answered, decides to yell at you for answering their phone. The rules at every office is different, it may feel like you can’t win.

It was made very clear that a call shouldn’t ever reach voice mail at your first job. Your second company had a different view. It will take time to learn the details at each company that you work. Approach each new job with an open mind and ask questions to accomplish this. There may be a friendly person who will take you under their wing and show you around.

A Peek Into Company Culture

Company culture encompasses your interactions with customers, co-workers and even the way you dress. If you have been out of the job place for awhile, it may be difficult to know what to wear to work. If the company is large enough, the company handbook will give you clues such as no jeans or sneakers. Observing your coworkers is one of the best ways to figure out what to wear. You should also pay attention to their mannerisms. You may be able to use your cell phone during the day if you notice everyone else using theirs. If no one else seems to be using their phones, the best option is to keep it on vibrate, or off, and in your bag.

When you are faced with so many new things starting at a new company, it is surprising to see anyone be successful. But if you go in with an open mind, ask a lot of questions, and try to play by the culture rules, you will find it much easier to fit in with the new crowd. A person with an open mind will not assume things about other people or a company. Give yourself time to fit in. It is better to float in softly like a butterfly, than to knock down walls like a bulldozer.

Accreditations are good for those who have them. However do not get too hung up on academic achievements that you might have missed. If you left classes at the age of sixteen and therefore went directly into the field of employment then you should not feel worried about competing job seekers who have studied for A’ Levels or even Higher education Diplomas. As an alternative, look at the fact that you already have a bit more years work expertise under your belt compared with what they have got. In fact, while they were sitting studying you’re within the “serious environment” of employment, achieving practical, on the job expertise.

This really is of course not accurate. To help a Resume go a long way you should capture the future employers interest early. Hence all important job experience you will have already gained really should be right at the beginning of the document.

Don’t forget, that as men and women move on throughout their jobs it is career experience that moves them onwards. Senior Professionals that have moved on through the business will not have done so by means of passing a test. It’s going to be his or her practical experience and also accomplishments that have helped them to get career progression, more responsibility and inevitably a better wage.

Thus, if you’re troubled by your own lack of academic qualifications then you shouldn’t be. Pinpoint the vacancy you happen to be trying to get and use your Curriculum vitae in order to show what practical knowledge you already possess under your belt that could turn you into the right candidate for the role. Actions usually definitely do speak even louder than words!

When you are considering working from house, there is a set of decisions that should be made. Very first, you must decide whether or not working at home is right for you personally. Next, you require to think about what kind of function at house work you will probably be doing. There are many opportunities for freelances out there, both offline and off. Having a effective freelance career starts with evaluating your personal skills and requirements in a work and then finding the correct match.

Occasionally the greatest place to begin with your freelance career is where your out of the home career ended. Many women discover that they can turn out to be independent contractors within the field that they previously worked in. You can use your earlier work experience like a launching pad for your freelance career. Some of the ways to use your encounter to your advantage are: discovering a company that hires individuals in your field to function from house, using your earlier experience to turn out to be an “expert” writer in your field or starting a business related for your earlier field.

However, some people appear at their freelance careers as a way to break out of their old work. If you’d like to try something completely various, there are plenty of opportunities for entry-level function as an independent contractor. Many of these jobs deal with telephone or online client service. Whenever you work as a customer support agent from your home, you just require a reliable Internet connection and a working phone. Companies also hire medical transcriptionists, data entry professionals and virtual personal assistants to telecommute.

Choose very first what kind of job you’d like to do and then work from there. If you’re truly a people person and need to get out each day, direct sales or a local support company might be right for you personally. If you are the kind of mom who lives online and is comfortable with the Web, try finding a work or starting your personal company on the web. If you like the comfort of having a weekly paycheck, appear into telecommuting positions.

Once you’ve decided what category of work you’d like, do some research on what it takes to be effective at that kind of company. If you feel like you’re drawn to one particular business or organization, then sit on your decision for a week and see how it feels. Imagine what your life will probably be like as you take on the duties of that job. Most importantly, be realistic with yourself about how much time you are able to devote for your business. Discovering the right match isn’t hard when you thoroughly think about your choices.

With the prospect of a double-dip recession looming, more workers could soon be facing redundancy. Positive thinking is imperative at this trying time. Recruitment experts warn that whilst keeping a cheery outlook is crucial, it mustn’t be allowed to cloud the practicalities of getting a new role.

The problem arises when workers are overly optimistic about their prospects. People with glittering CVs or a generous redundancy package are particularly at risk. In the end, your chances of reemployment may be prejudiced by being unrealistic about the issues involved in securing a new role and as a result not taking steps in the right direction.

One misapprehension is the time it may take to get a job. A survey taken recently, stated that 21% of individuals who had been made redundant a short time ago, had hung on for up to eight weeks before registering with their local Jobcentre Plus. Although it may be appealing to put thoughts of work to the back of the mind for a while,in this difficult market it is recommended, to begin searching for work immediately.

Individuals who think positively, may presume that securing a similar or possibly better position, will not be a problem. Whilst this might happen for a fortunate minority, other optimists will not be so lucky. Consider how your CV might look if you delay returning for too long; a gap may deter prospective employers. It is not good simply to look to previous contacts either, as there is no certainty that they can help.

Finding the right balance

The trick is to ally positive thinking and practical actions.Start job-hunting as soon as possible, even if you’re on gardening leave. Online research and the trade press will help you keep on top of industry changes. Also, try networking at job events and social gatherings or look at volunteering. This can improve your CV, help re-evaluate your skills and could lead to a new career.

Reflecting anew on your skills and how to use them, being flexible and imaginative, is a vital element of career management. Contemplating a wholly new career path might be necessary, so it is advisable to get help from experts away from the usual sectors. Provided positive thinking is mixed with an appropriate amount of realism, redundancy can be a platform to bigger and better things.

Increasing numbers of people in the UK are finding alternative ways to combat redundancy or job loss. Experts contend that this may be because jobseekers are using a career change as a reason to move to freelance or part-time work.

Large numbers of jobseekers appear to be finding new ways to generate income other than benefits. Freelancing or working part-time can be a good way to avoid a gap on your CV. Of course, there are pros and cons. Success in freelancing and coping with the financial restrictions of a part-time role requires determination and discipline. A comprehensive career assessment will make it easier to understand if this is the path for you.

The Benefits

Autonomy and an ability to be flexible, choosing how and when best to work are big upsides to freelancing. There are pluses financially. If you win a large contract the commercial benefits will pass to you alone and not a company.

Filling the gap with a part-time job may well be a way to stay motivated when searching for a full time post. Good time management should facilitate both earning money and career planning as you hunt for a permanent role.

Needless to say, both ways will enhance the CV with new skills experience which will be beneficial to future employers.

The Ability to Cope with Instability

There are numerous areas where  freelancing and part-time roles can be discovered. However, they can come with negatives. Instability is a disadvantage with the uncertainty of contracts, hours and even timely payment. You are soley responsible, there are no set hours and the need to meet deadlines can cause much pressure. However, as a result the satisfaction of success can be deeply rewarding. Part-time working can lead to a drop in income and attention to budgeting will be needed.

Either by going online or visiting your local Jobcentre Plus you should be able to find everything you need from a new career and redundancy advice, to CV assessment and business intelligence tools.

A freelance or part-time role could be the way to change your life and make the most of redundancy.

Are you prepared for your interview and how to reply to all the questions, especially the question when they ask you if you have any questions? Do you know what questions you should ask or what if most of your questions have been answered?

Ladies of the larger size, can feel more confident when wearing their favourite plus size lingerie underneath. Can not having a question or anything to ask at this stage affect my interview?  It could be that your interview has been thorough adequately and very detailed, so of course all of your questions have been answered.  It might be really difficult to reply to this question without saying “No” if you have had a very beneficial and full interview, but you are still very mindful and wish to keep making a beneficial appearance, so will want to make sure that you ask at least one question, if not more.

Here are a few ideas to give some questions which could help you out of this awkward position. If you are stuck for ideas to inquire at this time in the interview, and all your questions have been answered, then there is a good question like asking the interviewers “why they like working for the business?”. You can ask the interviewer to explain about the company appraisal systsem. Questions could be raised about social activites amongst the staff, long term prospects with the corporation or any exciting future plans? Please remember to still consider these questions specifically to make sure that they sound authentic and relevant to your interview, the role, particularly the grade of the role that you have applied for. A good example of asking an irrelevant question would be asking a question about management responsibilities, budgets etc if you are only applying for a junior administrative job.

Interviewers constantly want to recognise that you have done your research on the company and this possibly could give you a opportunity to expand on some recent press or advertising activity. It could be that you would like to know a little further about the company, and it can be at this point that you may enquire.   If you are going to ask a question, then a number of good questions to ask are ones which are open to a fuller answer or discussion rather than a one word reply.   An example of open ended questions are “that’s interesting how did that come about?”, “can I inquire more about ….?” or “That’s interesting, might you tell me more?”.

It is good to be aware that  a few questions should not be asked as you don’t want to jeopardise the good impression you have made already. With the right level of confidence, even if you are  larger in size then presenting yourself in the  right way which includes your clothes and jewellery should assist in giving apositive attitude. These questions may always be asked a later time, assuming you were successful throughout your interview. How do I know which questions I must not ask? “What wage will I be on?” is a good question to avoid. Ensuring that you have the correct attitude and ability for the job is more important to the interviewer than them thinking that you are more interested in the money or amount of time not working.

To avoid the ordinary questions which most people ask, you should now have a number of ideas of more interesting and beneficial questions to ask and impress your interviewer with.
