Is Now The Time To Find a Top Paying Career?
Many people have recently been made redundant and face uncertain times. The reality is now could be great time to make a career change and find your true passion in life.
It could also give you the chance to find a top paying career.
One of the first things to do is to take some time to assess where you are now and what you want to do next. This is not a time to sit and feel depressed but to take action and begin to ask yourself some serious questions. Understand you are in control. Focus on what you are good at, where your strengths lie and what value you offer people.
Get career counseling. Many companies provide outplacement services as part of a redundancy package. Ask them to help you come up with new ideas on where your skills and experience can be utilised.
Ask yourself the question “What job would I love to do even if I didn’t get paid” Your answer may be very different to the job you have recently left. It can be daunting making a career transition. It is important to seek guidance on how to make the transition and a professional careers counsellour can provide guidance.
Research your new career choices. You can begin to explore new ideas and research companies on the internet. Google, yahoo and other search engines will provide lots of information. You never know when you will find something that you never thought would be of interest. More importantly work out what careers are in demand. If you have recently been made redundant from a car plant you may wish to consider researching industries that are in demand. By conducting searches on job boards you can find which jobs are in demand, obviously the more ads, the more that career will be in demand.
Tolls such as Google Trends can provide insight into what people search for on the internet. You may find that the biggest trend may be in travel, it would be wise to come to the conclusion that the travel industry may be a good option. Using google wonder wheel you can then find associated words or themes. So if you have been made redundant from a car yard and the travel industry is booming it may suggest that more planes will need to be built.
Make sure you rewrite your resume. If you are writing a career change letter or career change resume you may have to take a completely different approach to your current resume. Bear in mind that you may not possess the relevant experience and therefore your resume will not be as attractive as your competitors. Focus on your achievements rather than responsibilities, identify transferable skills and make as many comparisons as possible.
Use your free time wisely. Don’t fall into a rut, set yourself tasks each day and prepare yourself for knock backs and rejection. Use this period to develop skills, volunteer to help schools, colleges and local community centres.
Increase your network. Now is the time you can catch up with old friends and colleagues. Get in touch, tell them of your situation and you will be amazed at how people will rally round. If you can get people to make referrals you will find your chances of finding a new job will improve drastically. Ask them how their business is going, by targetting industries that are in growth stage you will find there are more jobs and even less competition. This massively improves your chances of making a career change.
Ask friends to recommend a good recruiter, utilise their networks and build your own network using linked in, facebook, friends reunited, twitter etc.
