In this economy, people might not want to seem ungrateful for the jobs they have, but it’s only natural to dream of greener pastures. After all, some professions just seem more exciting or prestigious than others. Salary.com recently conducted a survey to find the most glamorous professions, and here are the top five. But what does it actually take to land one of these jobs?
1. Fashion designer. It’s no wonder this profession sits at the top of the list. A career in fashion design conjures up images of runway shows in Paris, dressing stars for Hollywood red carpet events, and seeing your name emblazoned on clothing labels. But one doesn’t become the next Calvin Klein overnight. You need a fashion school education to learn design basics like sketching and pattern drafting, not to mention gaining an understanding of business practices and fashion trends.
2. Surgeon. How happy your mother would be to tell her friends that you were a surgeon. And there’s not a more rewarding job than saving people’s lives. Being a surgeon, however, takes four years of undergraduate work, four years of medical school, and then three to eight years of internship and residency. And then there’s the matter of being comfortable around blood and needles.
3. Airline pilot. They are the kings (and queens) of the skies, with their fancy uniforms and gleaming lapel wings. Commanding the cockpit of a jetliner would certainly be a rush. And you get paid to travel all over the world. But airline pilot training is intense and expensive. Major airlines typically require at least 3,000 hours of flight time, and competition is so tough that the actual number needed is actually much higher.
4. Photographer. As a shutterbug, you might be photographing celebrities and seeing your work on the cover of magazines. But that’s a big “might.” Anyone with a camera can call themselves a photographer, so you must learn to differentiate yourself, specializing in a targeted field like consumer products, advertising, or fashion design, and then work relentlessly to promote yourself to potential clients.
5. Investment banker. Money is power in the world of mergers and acquisitions, and the titans of industry rule over not only Wall Street, but the entire world’s markets. An MBA degree is a must for this position, so count on at least two years of graduate school, along with late night hours and cut-throat competition.
